Murcia landscapes
The main 301 road to Albacete penetrates into the Altiplano, crossing
vast field of vineyards with monastrell, garnacha and meseguera grapes,
which are supplied to more than a hundred of local wineries throughout
the area. Wines from here are produced with denomination of origin full
bidied wines of intense colour. Those interested in enology may visit
the winery of Cooperativa de San isidro in jumilla and then move on
to Yecla, where wines and olive oil may be purchased at the Cooperativa
la Purísima.
The best choice when visiting jumilla is to follow Cánovas street
up to the Vico Theatre and to contemplate examples of the almost extinct
craft of forging. Further on in Constitución square, there are
three ancentral family mansions: the casa de los Molina, the palacete
de Don Diego, and the building which now houses the jerónimo
Molina museum.
The Museum exhibits finds from the Bronze Age the middle ages and roman
periods. There is a remarkable collection of Iberian objects found at
the 38 sepulchres in Coimbra del barranco ancho burial site. After leaving
the museum it is always pleasant to walk along the narrow streets in
the old quarter, where you may visit church of Santiago, with a number
of styles represented from Renaissance to plateresque.
Very close to the town on Santa Ana´s hill lies a monastery
built by Franciscan monks in 1573. here we may visit a very surprising
museum, full of objects from fransican missions abroad. Inside the central
chapel, there is a carving by Salzillo the cristo de la columna and
before we continue towards Yecla a road takes us to the Castle, built
by the Marwuis of Villena after the Reconquest. The keep and the courtyard
are still in quite a good state.
