The Altiplano
Murcia Online Reservation
You must not be misled by the flat appearance of the Altiplano. The
area offers a wide choice of spots for trekking cycling or pot holing
Riding along the track from yecla to monte arabí you will find
the Neolithic cave paintings of Canto de la Visera and Mediodia. You
may obtain visitor permits at the town hall.
The rocks shows petroglifos used in ancient magic rituals. A long
distance trekking trail GR7 arrives at the Altiplano area from the North
of Spain and continues south towards the town of Cieza. The best season
to follow the track is no doubt in the autumn when the high summer temperatures
have already gone. We start the route in Pinoso 29 kms from Jumilla,
again walking into the vineyards. To follow the track simply look out
for the markets, made up of a couple of stripes in red and white.
We leave the altiplano along the C3223 secondary road to enter the
desert landscape of the uplands in Fortuna Abanilla. Rainfall here is
very limited. The abrupt nature of storms has modelled the land into
numerous ravines and strange arid shapes. Do not miss the chance to
leave the road just before the Casa Canta el gallo with its name on
the door and visit the rambla de la Parra. Another excellent spot is
the rambla del Chicano close to abanilla. The presence of small palm
groves at the bottom of these dry riverbeds brings memories of African
oases.
