We may start our route through the town beside the beautiful gardens
of España square. Toone side the town hall erected in the 19th
century and decorated with neomudejar ornaments. Here we may also find
a few modernist buildings as well as the parish church of San josé,
from the 19th century, which holds the imege of the Virgen de los Dolores,
patron saint of the town.
A bronze sculpture known as the Pava de la Balsa was erected in the
gardens here in 1887 at the time when the beautiful rubber plants were
introduced. This square leads us into the old quarter which still preserves
the ambience of typical seafaring districts, devoted to fishing.
The districts devoted by the fortified castle of San Juan de la Aguilas
on top of the hill that dominates both the town and its port, and separating
the eastern and western beaches. This fortified tower was built around
1579 for the defence of the town and it was later rebuilt in the 18th
century.
At the bottom of the hill lies the port of Aguilas in constant activity
with its fishing boats and its distinctive black and white lighthouse
working since 1859. Very close to the castle is another place of interest
the Mercado de Abastos. In the Paseo de Parra is the monument to the
railway a testimony of the importance of this means of transport a symbol
of wealth and economic prosperity for the locals in times past. The
locomotive was built by the British at the turn of the century and ran
on the first railway line between aguilas and Lorca in those years of
intense commercial activity when the prosperous local mining industry
was at its height.
