Aguilas Festivities
Festivities are deeply felt by the locals in Aguilas. First of all,
the Carnival. Sumptuous parades where most of the residents play an
active role, from Friday through to Tuesday, where music bands and carriages
flood the town with colours. It is a fiesta awarded the official category.
Event of national Interest, and which has been held for around two
hundred years. Among all of the events during these days, the National
Salsa Contest is outstanding. On the last Friday before the Holy Week,
is the day dedicated to the Virgen de los Dolores patron saint of the
town.
In the summer on the 16th of july there is along standing seafaring
tradition in most fishing towns, the marine procession of la virgin
del Carmen. Also in july on the 25th boat races and open air dances
on Santiago´s day.
Celebrations are completed in August with the Virgen de Agosto again
with boat races a tradition of Trying to get a turkey hanging from a
greasy pole from a fishing boat over the harbour water and other cultural
and sporting events.
