Aguilas as a modern town was the result of the projects of King charles
III and of his ministers Aranda and Floridablanca.
At that time Lorca was looking for a port to export its fruit and vegetable
products, and Aguilas was the exit point for the whole area. The count
of floridablanca Aranda Villanueva and other started to work and in
1785 Aguilas was finally born as a town built on a gridwork, with a
port with confort and efficiency in mind. The old Arab Roman Phoenician
argaric and paleolithic periods were left behind with all their remains.
Above all the Roman traces of the 1st to the 4th centuries among them
the thermae a source of different nterpretations hypotheses and even
of legends which referred to Aguilas as the ancient town of uric whose
exact location creates controversy even today. The truth is that Aguilas
has always been a city open to the Mediterranean, overlooking the sea
from the castle of San juan de las Aguilas.
Aguilas would soon become a thriving commercial centre, reaching its
height during the 19th century with the produce from the silver, lead
and iron mines. The town still preserves its seafaring tradition and
its deep seated vocation as a tourist resort.
