Aguilas The archeological museum
Created in 1999 by the local authorities of Aguilas it was opened to
the public in November 2000. it is at 16 calle conde de Aranda.
It holds a collection which narrates the history of the town, from
the remote Neolithic era, in the year 3000BC finding from the C6 cave
at Cabo Cope right up to the present day.
Among the most interesting sections is the collection of Roman antiquities.
The greater part of the material comes from archaeological excavations
carried out in Aguilas in recent years, where the Roman site which lies
under the town centre is being documented.
Most important for the present town are the remains dating from before
the founding and from the times of the founding of Aguilas, discovered
on the Castle of San Juan mount.
The Maritime Visitor´s centre shares the museum building. There
is a small permanent exhibition with the sea: decorative articles, fishing
gear, models showing the fishing methods used in the area displays of
fishermen´s knots, etc…
