Talking about monuments in Cartagena means referring to historical
evidence on a daily basis, indeed a large number of things may be admired
in the city and surrounding areas.
If we start at the Port with the main enclave in the square we can
admire the landscaped esplanade of the Heroes de Cavite as it were disembarking
erected as a tribute to all those who fought in the battles of CAvite
and looking to our ringht the first prototype submarine designed by
local engineer Isaac Peral a direct predecessor of the modern submarine.
Exactly opposite this is an inscription with a poem by Cervantes Besides
its emblematic inscription the monument to Charles III signals the start
of the Muralla del Mar, the fortification built on his orders in 1775
and which enclosed the whole of the original urban area.
Leaving the port behind us and just as we enter the city itself we
reach the City hall finished in 1907 in a modernist style. The plaza
del Ayuntamiento is the window that allows us to penetrate into the
most peculiar of all Cartagena, the so called intimate Cartagena.
Up along the calle del Cañón we find the Cuesta de la
Baronesa and from here the remains of the so called Catedral Vieja or
the Santa Maria, built on top of part of the stalls of the Roman Theatre
discovered in 1987 and still being excavated. The interesting archaeological
overlapping in this area of the city spans a period of over 2000 years
of history.
