Along calle Santa Florentina or calle Honda again to the intimate part
of the city la Serreta and the Esplanade of San Francisco with its sculpture
of the actor Isidoro Mariquez.
This used to be the access point to the Molinete nowadays under development
and excavations. This is one of the five hills of the city on which
the Roman Achropolis is thought to have been situated. There are remains
on the hilltop, of important public and religious buildings, its former
name San Cristobal del Molino used to be the most traditional of all
districts, that of the little cafés.
Stop an ask the elderly in the area about its history. Climbing towards
it we find streets that still preserve their names as their most distinctive
feature: Doncellas, Balcones Azules,…In nearby calle del Duque
the foundations of a savings bank are built on the remains of the Cardum
Mazimum a Roman road and some houses from the I century b.C.; To the
left of la Serreta is La Merced or Lake suare with the Palace of Aguirre
built by Victor Beltri as in many other modernist cases for a wealthy
mining family.
Walking uphill from the Palace of Aguirre along the calle de San Diego
we reach the Punic Wall erected at the end of the III century b.C.;
this stretch discovered in 1989 was very close to the entrance gates
of the Punic city.
Finally in order to complete our tour we must climb up to Parque Torres
with its Castle of la Concepción the oldest in the city XIV century.
Also La linterna a lighthouse part of the defensive system of watchtowers
built to withstand Berber invasions. On the slopes of the hill are two
significant buildings: the old Hospital de la Marina, the future headquarters
of the university engineering Faculty.
The Amphitheatre preserves several buttresses and vaults, and is one
of the oldest monuments of its kind still to be found in Hispània.
