Cartagena The Roman Theatre

The Roman Theatre built towards the end of the First century b.C. is the most distinctive of all monuments here. The remains of a wall dated at first between 589 and 590 b.C. may be seen in calle de la Soledad.

The wall was at first thought to be of Byzantine origin and even an exhibition hall opened at the site was named after it Byzantine Wall hall. However new evidence and analyses have confirmed the Roman origin of this wall, although under tha Byzantine domination the wall used in the fortification of the city together with the walls that surrounded the external perimeter of the Roman Theatre.
