The fairly descriptive name of La Manga hides a curious orographic
event, one of the outstanding features of the murcian coast: a strip
of land of approximately 24 kms in length, extending between Cabo de
Palos and the Punta del Mojón creating a natural divide between
the mediterraneanthe salt water lagoon which we call Mar Menor.
Originally what is now called La Manga del mar menor was an open bay.
At obth of its extremes volcanic rocks slowly started to trap sediments
and sand from the currents until a sandy bar was finally formed, with
dunes and wild vegetation, and extensive beaches, bathed by two seas:
the Mediterranean and the Menor.
La manga is a narrow stretch of land, from 200 metres to 1.5kms wide.
It is crossed by natural channels which keep both seas linked, these
so called golas allow water from the Mediterranean into the lagoon.
The area remained completely unspoiled until the sixties, when La Manga
was finally discovered as a touristic resort.
It then experienced a transformation, with the construction of numerous
apartment blocks, hotels, infrastructure, ports, sailing schools and
leisure facilities.
