Lorca Monuments
A visit to the numerous monuments in Lorca the city of the hundred
coats of arms may be started in the old quarter. The heart of the old
city comprises a large series of buildings around the Plaza de España
The City Hall was originally conceived as a prison. From there to the
Colegiata de San Patricio with its magnificent main front a good example
of prebaroque architecture as well as the grille that closes the presbytery.
Opposite the church, the courts of justice, taking up the old Casa del
Corregidor, Mayor´s house.
Next to this building is the Posito the warehouse for the city´s
grain, which nowadays this houses of the Municipal historical Archive.
The XVII and XVIII centuries contributed numerous mansions and family
manor houses the Casa de los Mula or the Casa de los Moreno.
We find the Palace of Guevara in calle Lope Gisbert. The building is
full of baroquism with a front in churriguerescan style, including four
Solomonic columns which frame the family coat of arms. Further ahead
is the Casa de los Condes de San Julian and very close to this the Casino
built in the late XIX century which has an interesting ballroom.
From the old quarter we may proceed to the Castle built by Arabs in
the XIII century. Its main feature the Alphonsine Tower is a more recent
construction built in the reign of Alfonso X. We find the porche de
San Antonio, a crenelated tower part of the old Arab wall in the Calle
Zapatería. From Roman times the Milestone at present attached
to the Casa de los Ponce de León can be found in San Vicente
Square.
In Lope Gisbert street next to the Palace of Guevara is the Centre
for Craftsmanship where pieces of a very rich and varied style typical
of the area of the Guadalentín valley are exhibited.
The bustling social life of the city concentrates around Corredera
street la Corredera, a reflection of the commercial traditions of Lorca.
