Yecla
Murcia Online Reservation
A further 26 kms across vineyards takes us to Yecla, another wine producing
town with an important furniture industry. As in many other Murcian
towns, YEcla also has its own cerro del Castillo.
It is here that the Santuario de la patrona was built, overlooking
the city. On every 7th of December, the locals gather here, firing salvos
with ancient blunderbusts. This is part of the festivities of la Purisima,
conmmemorating the departure of yeclas to the Battle of Vinaroz, in
1642. Some of the monuments in town are rather unusual, like the dome
of the church of la purísima covered in stripes of blue and white
glazed tiles.
In the Main square there is also an interesting group of monuments
encircled by a Renaissance colonnade. Here is the Town hall opposite
the renaissance building of la Lonja.
Next to it the Torre del Reloj erected in the 19th century. In spain
street the casa de la cultura houses the cayetano de margelina archaeological
museum with its collection of reproductions of el Greco.
